Lesson 12-How to get high grades in GCSE Science with resources
General Tips
l Flashcards and a form of a summary sheet like a mindmap>>>Notes-will help you to actually go over key information strategically-use notes as a way to strengthen your understanding instead.
l Memorise Mark Schemes and do Past Papers-Helps you to familiarise yourself and not get overwhelmed aswell as understanding tricky parts more
l Learn your conversions and use mnemonics- This is important for all of the subjects as conversions are in alot of science calculations and can cause you to lose alot of marks.Mnemonics will also help you to remember key information.
l Learn your Practicals and equipment-There are so many questions on practicals that you’ve studied and ones that you know and ones you don’t.You need to know what an Independent, dependent and control variables are in your experiments aswell as the role of certain equipment and you need to think critically about what improvements you can make aswell as how to measure substances like what unit or with what equipment.
l Having a positive and growth mindset-target your weak areas in exams.
l Check over your answers and be as clear as possible and write in a processed way.
Biology-
l Watching medical or visual videos-This is really useful for especially processes that are harder to understand or visualise, for example, protein synthesis or kidney filtration as it allows you to visualise the processes happening inside a body, obviously some times you wont understand the medical terms but you should only really be concerned with what is on your specification and seeing what is happening rather than what you don’t need to be learning but i found it to be really helpful.
l Drawing out the processes alongside writing/annotations helps you to understand and process whats actually happening.Focus on understanidng each part like a flowchart rather than memorising as biology questions require application.
l Memorising Processes according to the mark scheme -and applying this to flashcards so you can actively recall and doing this constructively by targetting weak points in exams youve done.
Chemistry-
l Mastering the basics as it is foundational knowledge-like atoms, isotopes, moles, acids that underpin alof of the chemistry topics.
l Mindmaps/Summary sheets-to make connections, for example for organic chemistry or all the different types of bonds.Tables can also help you to visualise specific parts of information.
l Memorise Equations/Formulas-These are integral for chemistry as there are a lot of calculations and key information.
Annotate your periodic table so you get a clearer idea on groups/periods and ram and atomic number aswell as writing out the charges.
Caluculations-practice,the more you do the easier itlle be-mnemonics to remember the triangles/Mr barnes.
Physics
l Diagrams, annotations and simplified processes-to help you understand better
l Focus on understanding the actual principles rather than just memorising as this will help you in application/harder questions.
l Relationships between the equations-don’t just memorise equations but realise why exactly the variables are related as there are alot of questions regarding this as well as knowing units for the equations
Conversions-really important to do as you can get more marks by knowing conversions.Use mnemonics like king henry died unexpectedly by drinking chocolate milk...can find more of these suited to your units on google.
