Lesson 9-how to get high grades in GCSE Maths -resources aswell

Maths Study Guide-specifically tailored for GCSES

This can be used generically for maths its just my experience doing GCSES-which is just a formal exam in the uk which  takes place at the age of 15/16 in around 7-12 subjects and decide what you can study next.

 1. -Have a positive mindset and be optimistic -its easy to get overwhelmed with maths and have a deep hatred and disgust for it but once those feelings harbour it leads to essentially your brain being less open to learning and builds anxiety instead of confidence.Maths used to be my worst and least favourite subject alongside physics in yr 10 but yr 11 I actually enjoyed it,I realised it wasn’t that bad and perhaps its just been the way ive been looking at it and I can say despite the notorious grade boundaries this year-2025 I did well.I like to read books particularly classics so in the summer holidays before I started my GCSE year, I read a book called A mathemeticians apology by G.H  Hardy which helped me look at maths in a more beautiful way and to realise its not so bad, just fake it till you make it.

 2. Equation/Formula/Key methods Sheet-People like to make notes for maths which I wouldn’t really recommend. One thing that you can easily get marks on is just not forgetting key formulas or equations and even general methods for things like conversions,SOHCAHTOA,Angle rules, what to do in different quadratic equations, the difference between the mehods in direct and inverse proprtion, the different triangles and even area and proprtion of different shapes. As you learn key concepts or a method that works for a topic add it on to a sheet of paper that you can go over quickly as recap or right before the exam.

 3. Writing an instruction manual/flowchart- As maths is very process orientated and can be a lot for your brain to comprehend which is why it makes it easier to break harder topics into bite-sized steps and flowcharts  for when the topic gets a bit more “scarier or has a plot twist”.Also when you come across that problem  there normally  is a pattern to what examiners can ask you in Maths so  your brain becomes more comfortable  and  will makes it  much easier for visual learners and write on paper so you have like a cheat sheet with all the methods/approaches for different topics-makes it easier.

4Practice Questions/Topic Questions-This is really important so that you become really familiar with the exam layout and structure.Practice every single day at least 1 or 2 questions so that you don’t get overwhelmed when you sit the exam. You need to be challenging yourself because when you make mistakes you then need to target exactly what topic it was and find out what your doing wrong by mark schemes aswell as video solutions to discover more methods. Before the exams I found that a lot of  study youtubers have predicted  maths papers  that a lot of the topics mentioned are accurate and are really useful when your finished with all the exam papers. Its really imporrtat however that you for example don’t do questions that feel easier but that are your weak areas and typically questions at the end with higher marks.
